An accord has been signed by the government representatives, employers and trade unions to form a Social Council for Textile, Leather, Footwear and Rubber Industries. This is the first ever council in Croatia wherein social dialogue will be carried out at industrial level.

The council will include seven representatives each from the Ministry of Economy, Labour and Enterprise, the Associations of the Textile and Leather Industries within Croatian Employers’ Association (HUP) and the trade unions of textile, leather, footwear and rubber industry workers.

The key purpose behind formulating this council is to address the issues of the most vulnerable industrial sector of the country.

Formation of a Social Council for Textile, Leather, Footwear and Rubber Industries would prove to be a model for the establishment of more such councils for rest of the industrial sector. Such councils will offer help in the execution of economic recovery program, which was recently presented by Prime Minister Ms. Jadranka Kosor.

These councils are based on the European Union model of cooperation among social partners. Around 30 social councils are operating in EU under this EU model, informed HUP Acting Director General Mr. Bernard Jakelic.

Establishing first Social Council at the level of an industrial sector is imperative as this sector is facing several problems such as operating losses, production decline, and massive lay-offs, said Union representative Mr. Ozren Matijasevic.

Similar social councils would also be established for the other sectors such as wood-processing, factory as well as publishing sector, soon.
