In the vertical burned tests, the sample is suspended vertically so that it can be ignited on the bottom. After ignition, the ignition source (usually a Bunsen burner) is withdrawn and the lenght of the burn of the sample in a set period of time (6 -12 seconds) is measured. If the sample does not burn for the entire time, the time to extinguish is noted. Materials that burn while the ignition source is in contact but go out quickly when it is removed are termed self-extinguishing.
